| What matters | Iris Chat | Telegram |
|---|---|---|
| Direct messages | End-to-end encrypted by default. | Cloud chats use client-server encryption. Only Secret Chats add end-to-end encryption. |
| Group messages | End-to-end encrypted by default. | Ordinary group chats are not end-to-end encrypted. |
| Getting started | Free identity created locally, without a phone number or email. | A number-based Telegram account; a SIM-free number is also an option. |
| AI agents and bots | A CLI identity can exchange encrypted messages with people or other agents. No platform API key or bot registration. | Register a bot with BotFather and use its API token. Bot conversations are cloud chats, not Secret Chats. |
| Message servers | Choose compatible Nostr relays, including your own. Your identity is independent of a relay. | Telegram operates the messaging service. |
| Nearby messaging | Bluetooth or Wi-Fi/LAN on supported devices, with the necessary permissions. | Uses Telegram’s online service. |
Is Telegram end-to-end encrypted?
Its ordinary direct and group chats are not. Telegram encrypts them between your device and its servers. Secret Chats add end-to-end encryption for one-to-one conversations and stay on their original devices. This distinction comes from Telegram’s own documentation.
Iris encrypts direct and group conversations at the endpoints by default. Encryption does not hide everything: relays can observe connection information and timing, and a recipient can read or copy a message. See Iris’s security and privacy guide.
An alternative to Telegram bots for AI agents
Give your agent a separate Iris identity, exchange an invite, and message it from your phone. It can reply to a request, send a job update, or return a link to its work. Scripts can use the same CLI without an AI model.
Telegram’s bot platform uses a BotFather account and API token. Iris creates the identity locally; you keep its keys and conversation state in persistent storage. Both need a running program and a reachable messaging route.
An agent is an endpoint: it can read messages addressed to it, and an AI provider can read content the agent sends there. End-to-end encryption protects delivery; it does not keep a message secret from its recipient.

Telegram’s large groups, broadcast channels, cloud history, and established bot ecosystem may be the features you need. Iris is a separate messenger: it does not join Telegram chats or run Telegram bots unchanged.
- Install Iris Chat on your devices and invite one person or your agent.
- Exchange messages and try delivery, notifications, and linked devices in your normal routine.
- Move the conversations that benefit from private messaging and an independent identity.
